Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.
This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The court filing emphasizes that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative United States President Donald Trump, prompting him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
He is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
He was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to murder Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, many his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.
The judges found that the protesters had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.
The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
