Christantus Uche Sparks Dominant Crystal Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their first-ever European adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Missing key players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a comfortable win that all but secures them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their upcoming match against Finnish KuPS should be enough to seal straight passage to the knockout stages, particularly following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Opportunity
This occasion provided a platform for several Palace's lesser-used players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning since joining on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a well-taken goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second game in match.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season were no match even for a largely rotated Palace outfit. The visitors were further depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee waved away the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then missed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the traveling side.
