Delhi Awakens to Dangerous Pollution Following Celebrations

Tuesday brought residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "alarming" category.

Extremely High Air Quality Measurements

Multiple areas of Delhi showed an AQI exceeding 500, which represents 10x the recommended limit established by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, levels of toxic particulate matter soared to of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15-20x exceeding acceptable levels.

Firecracker Ban and New Changes

For the past four years, officials had enforced a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the dangerous smog that engulfs the metropolis as colder weather begins.

Yet earlier this year, the newly elected local administration appealed to the supreme court to propose a modification of the restrictions.

The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically questioned by conservation groups as being only about 30% less polluting – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Judicial Verdict and Reality

Despite concerns of medical and ecological activists, the court approved the appeal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during specific hours throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was considerable disregard of the designated hours across the city, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout the capital showed air quality peaking around the night hours to the most severe levels observed during celebrations in at least the past three years.

International Consequences

The widespread use of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also triggered a controversy with bordering the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region pointing to deteriorating atmospheric conditions in Lahore on hazardous particles coming from across the border following the celebrations.

Chronic Pollution Problem

Extremely elevated levels of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have continued as a significant challenge for over a decade and a half, with the situation continuing to worsen.

Around celebratory seasons, the amount of hazardous particles in the environment has been observed to spike to significantly exceeding the worst records ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was formerly viewed as the planet's dirtiest city.

Diverse Contamination Sources

The situation in the city is resulting from a mix of various sources including transportation pollution, construction debris, construction activities, rubbish burning and pollutants from agricultural fires in nearby states of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, agricultural workers regularly burn crop residue to prepare for next season, creating toxic haze that becomes contained over the city as winter air arrives.

Medical and Economic Toll

Both financial and medical consequences on the roughly thirty-three million residents residing in the Delhi area is substantial, according to numerous studies.

The contaminated air causes high levels of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung conditions, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be accounting for approximately 10k early mortalities annually in Delhi.
