White House Reveals Federal Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark
The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.
Official Announcement and Initial Details
Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for letting employees go.
While the official did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union for federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.
Union Response and Legal Challenges
Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the moves in the legal system.
This is shameful that the government has used the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver critical services to communities nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.
The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”
Political Standoff and Budget Dispute
Congressional Democrats have declined to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved soon.
At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP bill, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.
“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” the speaker stated. “Starting next week, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”
Judicial and Practical Limits
Last week, unions filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from carrying out any reductions in force during the funding gap. Moreover, a court official directed the administration to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any federal employees had been brought back to carry out layoffs.
An analysis argued that a government shutdown limits the authority of the government to conduct terminations, citing guidance that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the funding expired.
Consequences for Employees
The layoffs occurred on the very day that government employees received only a incomplete payment covering the final days of September but not the beginning of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the period.
A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.
“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations open and operational,” Stier said. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this funding crisis.”
A notable point is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid amid the funding gap.
